March 8th was a day to remember for all the right reasons. The world over, women commemorated the 101st anniversary …

March 8th was a day to remember for all the right reasons. The world over, women commemorated the 101st anniversary of the day set aside for women from all walks of life. And Google’s London office was no different. A Pan-African Google was arranged to ring in a new year in gender celebration. Google offices in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda all tuned in to join the conversation.

The London office was represented by the Google Top Black Talent girls: Charlene Bello, Marie Shabaya and Mushana Mkushi each from Ghana/Nigeria, Kenya and Zimbabwe respectively.

The conversation was chaired by ladies at Google’s Ghana offices where the very inspiring Clinical Psychologist, former politician and academic Dr Angela Lamensdorf Ofori-Atta spoke about the lessons she learned from her experiences and the women in her life including her grandmother who was the first Ghanaian woman to join the National airforce. Her talk set the conversation in motion, with attendees then talking about the role of the woman in various contexts.

The very accomplished women at the Nigeria office noted that women in politics had not only a responsibility to their constituents (who may or may not be women) but to women at large. The credentials were also highlighted as a point of concern. The conversation was also joined by Kenyan blogger, activist and lawyer Ory Okolloh from her Johannesburg home. She noted the power of technology in helping women better their communities from her own experiences as a political activist with the internet her helm. She noted the importance of critical mass in such a context.

The Kenya office closed the conversation with a short poem by George Bernard Shaw then a surprise live interview with Citizen TV who caught the last of the hangout and broadcast it on their evening news.

Overall, it was an empowering event leaving all with plenty to think about and plenty to change. And for the young women in the London office, it gave them higher aspiration to tend toward. As the women of the Ghana office cautioned, ‘Remember to come home, Oh!’. The plea that was not wasted on deaf ears.

M. Shabaya

The Africa Club at London Business School is delighted to announce its 11th Annual Africa Day Conference, which will take place on Saturday, 19 …

The Africa Club at London Business School is delighted to announce its 11th Annual Africa Day Conference, which will take place on Saturday, 19 May 2012 at London Business School.

The 2012 Africa Day Conference will bring the conversation around Africa’s ownership role of affairs on the Continent to the London Business School campus. This year’s conference, appropriately themed “Africa, Taking Ownership: Successes & Challenges”, explores and celebrates the many ways in which Africans are taking ownership for the continent’s destiny, driving reforms, and propelling growth from within.

The past year, Africa has held up remarkably well despite controversial evidence of rising wealth inequality, deteriorating public finances, and stagnating growth in western economies. Africa’s economic liberalisation, growing middle-class, and entrepreneurial success stories are increasingly coming to epitomise the world’s hope and aspirations for “emerging markets”. We feel excited not just for the thrilling intensity of dialogue we expect at the conference, but also for the further success stories of true ownership that lie in Africa’s near future!

Look out for updates on ticket @ www.africancaribbeansociety.com
